Description

This was a CRAZY target to process... but TONS of fun.  I realize this is a unique take on the commonly imaged California Nebula.  I'm curious what you think.

First, the HA is absurdly bright.  A single 5 minute sub could probably be processed into a final image. It's that bright.  S2 is also pretty bright.  There isn't as much diffuse S2 around the nebula itself, but there is a wonderful structure overlayed on the HA.  The O3 on the other hand is extremely faint.  I imaged this over three nights and put 70% of my time into O3.  And it was still very very faint.

Most images of this target are just red, illustrating just how strong the HA is.  Those that do capture and present O3 generally show just the central area.  What is interesting, is that there is actually a lot of diffuse (even fainter) O3 all around the main nebula itself.  You can see it in this image as gray patches.  This is O3!  It is so faint that even after almost 15 hours it barely showed up, and that's using an epsilon for imaging.  I dont know how much integration time it would take to really bring it out.

I've never really been interested in this target before, but it was in a good spot and I decided to give it a try.  I am amazed at how much structure and details there are, and how the nebula seems to have layer upon layer.  There's nice little globs here and there, and some tiny galaxies throughout the image.  These come up green with my color selection!

In any event, this turned out to be one of the more fun images I've made.  I really had to push my skills on getting the O3 to push through all that hydrogen, but in the end I'm pleased.  I generally nuke the green in my images, but I left it in here as I think it layered in nicely and provided some additional dimension to the image.

As always, C&C is welcome.
